In this digital era, you must equip yourself with the skills and abilities to concentrate fully on a single task at hand. Thus, you should learn and exercise deep work.

Otherwise, the continuous flow of notifications will dilute your focus, and perhaps you would miss some of the essential details.

The majority of people think that doing multiple jobs will increase their productivity. It’s wrong because doing multiple activities decrease productivity.

To back this theory up, a professor of business Sophie Leroy surveys at Minnesota University in 2009. In her survey, she clarified that switching from one task to another would diminish the quality of the second task.

As you switched to the second task, the brain still stuck with the first one. It signified that while doing the second task you were partially attached to the first one.

To demonstrate this, she has experimented on two groups – named Group A and Group B. Both the groups were assigned the same task that was to work on the puzzle.

She, however, interrupted the participant of group A and assigned another task of resume reading so that the participant of group A made a hypothetical hiring decision.

During the experiment, Sophie gave a test to the participants of group A. To examine the number of puzzles words that were still glued in participants’ minds while working on the second task.

On the other side, group B was allowed to complete the puzzle first before switching to the resume activity. The outcome Group A which was focused intensely on the first activity that’s puzzle game feels trouble to focus on the second activity that’s recruiting the right candidate.

Thus, multitasking decreases your productivity. Moreover, unnecessary sticking with social media platforms will also dwindle your productivity.

Watching continuous notifications from the social media and email tab on your browser will also derail your focus. Even if, you don’t immediately reply to them.

Therefore, you shouldn’t unnecessarily open tabs because glancing over notification pop-ups have enough power to distract you. In another survey conducted by McKinney firm in 2012 found out that on average, the employee consumed 60% of his workweek surfing on the internet and using online tools for communication while only 30% are committed to replying to emails.

Even though, the workers believe that they’re working hard each day.

They feel this way because fulfilling small activities and spreading information to colleagues make them feel productive and busy. The truth, however, is all these tiny activities clog you in focus fully.

Lesson: B – There’re various tactics to do deep work and you can select the one that suit you

As you’re aware of the obstacles that come your way, you can prepare for them. To overcome roadblocks and exercise deep work use these four approaches.

Starting with monastic philosophy, in this, you live like a monk and devote yourself to your work completely. You isolate yourself and remove every possible element that distracts you.

The second philosophy is the bimodal technique. Here, you isolate yourself for a long time to do the work with deep focus and use the remaining time for the rest of the stuff.

The third philosophy is the rhythmic technique. In this, you create a habit by blocking time so that you exercise a deep work session. With time, this session will turn into a habit that will automatically execute each day at a specific time.

The last philosophy is the journalistic technique which allows you to use any free time you’ve to do work mindfully.

So, now you understand that the difference between deep and zone work. You can get into the state of deep work with rituals, but zone work occurs by chance

There’re three rituals to do work mindfully. The first one is to separate specific spaces for your work.

For this, you either place a don’t disturb sign at the door or visit a coffee shop or a library to work without disturbance.

An example, the author of the Harry Potter novel J.K Rowling booked a hotel so that she could have a place where she can complete the last part of the series in the deep focus.

The second ritual, you probably set is to define boundaries. Here, you detach yourself from the internet and switch off your mobile phone so that you work mindfully.

And the last ritual is to do activities that nourish your brain so you can continue to practice deep work. Because it’s crucial to fulfill your body’s need with healthy nutrition and appropriate exercise.

Otherwise, your brain won’t sustain psychic energy to stay in a state of deep work.

Lesson: C – Technology can easily distract you from focusing on one thing thus be careful

In today’s world, our brain easily gets distract. Everywhere you go, you’ll find out that people are stick with their screens.

Some of them play their favorite games while others are messaging, refreshing their Instagram feed or Facebook page. It happens because of our programming, but there’s a reason for that.

The distraction could be a threat or an opportunity, so our brain designs in a way to pay attention proactively to our surroundings. This old habit, however, makes it difficult to focus on one activity at a time.

To overcome this problem, you can use productive meditation. This meditation usually performs while you work physically such as taking your dog for a walk, traveling to work, and taking a shower.

In this, you assign a specific problem to your brain to solve it.

So start with basic questions to view your problem from various aspects helps you in investigating the root cause of a problem. Along with this, the process will guide you to build focus.

Remember, during this process don’t allow your mind to drift into another topic. Moreover, if you’re still stuck with the screen, you should have tried to go cold turkey or quit your social media for the next 30 days.

Once this period finished, ask yourself, “Is there anyone who came to know that I stop using social media?” If the answer is no, then quitting your social media account is a better option, however, if the answer is yes, you should keep using it.
